U.S.: Origin of State Names
As it is well-known, there are 50 U.S. states. Each state has a name, and every name has its history.
Several states were named after famous people. New York, as well as its main city, was named in honor of the brother of the King of England, Duke of York, after the territory was captured by the British from the Dutch. The states of North and South Carolina were named in honor of King Charles I, and Maryland was named in honor of his consort, Queen Mary. Virginia and West Virginia are named in honor of Queen Elizabeth I, The Virgin Queen. Georgia got its name in honor of King George I. Louisiana was named after French King Louis XIV.
